Broadway Auto Row

The Broadway Auto Row Specific Plan sets forth a comprehensive vision for Oakland’s historic Auto Row.

The Plan both reflects the unique character of the buildings lining Auto Row and re-imagines uses for the former dealerships. This site will soon become a unique area for new uses and economic growth as many of the current lease-holding auto dealerships will be encouraged to relocate to the former Oakland Army Base where space and storage for dealer’s parked cars will be more plentiful. Improvement of this area is key to establishing a new image and character not only for the Broadway/Macarthur/San Pablo Redevelopment Zone but also for the entire City of Oakland.

This Plan capitalizes on existing infrastructure and the surrounding health care niche market and provides for regional-serving retail and improved pedestrian experience along Auto Row. In addition, this Plan envisions an increase in residential density along the avenue, reflecting the opinions of stakeholders in the central and adjacent neighborhoods. The goal of this Specific Plan is to provide an identity to the Auto Row area by installing visible gateways to anchor the corridor, creating nodes of activity along the strip, preserving and reusing valuable historical assets, enhancing open space opportunities, providing regional serving retail and increasing housing choices for Oakland residents. Special care was taken to align Specific Plan goals and strategies with the existing General Plan guidelines in order to support the City of Oakland’s mission for urban development.
